WHAT DOES MEDICARE PART A COVER?

  • Inpatient Hospital Care

This encompasses all care provided after a physician admits you to a hospital. Medicare covers up to 90 days per benefit period in a general hospital, along with 60 additional lifetime reserve days. Furthermore, it includes coverage for up to 190 lifetime days in a Medicare-certified psychiatric hospital.

  • Skilled Nursing Facility Care

Medicare provides coverage for room, board, and specific services in a skilled nursing facility, such as medications, tube feedings, and wound care. This coverage extends up to 100 days per benefit period. To qualify, you must have been hospitalized for at least three consecutive days within 30 days before your admission to the skilled nursing facility and require skilled nursing care or therapy services

  • Home Health Care

While typically covered under Part B, Part A coverage becomes effective if you've been a hospital inpatient for at least three consecutive days and start receiving home care within 14 days after discharge. This coverage includes up to 100 days of daily care or an unlimited amount of intermittent care.

  • Hospice Care

Hospice care remains covered as long as your provider certifies that it is medically necessary.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Typically, Part A comes at no additional cost, as it is funded by specific taxes paid during your working years to secure future Medicare coverage. If you have worked at least 10 years in the United States, you likely qualify for premium-free Part A. However, if you haven’t met this requirement, you can still purchase Part A provided you have been a legal resident or held a green card for at least five years.
