Medicare covers a lot—but not everything. Here are 10 common services it skips, and how to plan ahead.
While Medicare handles hospital stays, doctor visits, and many prescriptions, it leaves gaps that can surprise even seasoned beneficiaries. Here's a condensed guide to 10 services Medicare doesn’t cover—and smart ways to manage the costs.
🦷 1. Dental Care
No coverage for cleanings, fillings, dentures, or root canals. Medicare only pays for dental exams tied to specific medical treatments (e.g., organ transplants, cancer care).
Fix: Consider a dental insurance or discount plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan with dental benefits.
👓 2. Routine Vision Care
Eye exams, glasses, and contacts aren’t covered. Cataract surgery and diabetic eye exams are exceptions.
Fix: Buy separate vision insurance or choose a Medicare Advantage plan with vision perks.
🔊 3. Hearing Aids
Hearing tests and aids are excluded. Medicare Part B covers diagnostic exams only if medically necessary.
Fix: Look into Medicare Advantage plans, discount programs, or over-the-counter hearing aids.
💆♂️ 4. Chiropractic & Massage Therapy
Only spinal manipulation for subluxation is covered. Massage therapy is not covered—even for chronic pain.
Fix: Some Advantage plans may help; otherwise, expect to pay out-of-pocket.
💉 5. Cosmetic Surgery
Elective procedures like facelifts or tummy tucks aren’t covered. Reconstructive surgery after injury or illness may be.
Fix: Save separately or explore financing options with providers.
🦶 6. Routine Foot Care
Callus removal and nail trimming aren’t covered. Medicare pays for foot care only if linked to diabetes or injury.
Fix: Budget for routine podiatry or seek supplemental coverage.
✈️ 7. Overseas Medical Costs
Medicare doesn’t cover care outside the U.S. Emergency air transport can be especially costly.
Fix: Medigap plans may cover 80% of emergency care abroad (up to $50,000). Travel insurance is another option.
🏥 8. Long-Term Care
Nursing homes and assisted living aren’t covered. Medicare pays only for short-term rehab after hospitalization.
Fix: Consider long-term care insurance, Medicaid, or include costs in retirement planning.
🧘 9. Limited Acupuncture, No Massage
Up to 20 acupuncture sessions for chronic back pain are covered. Massage therapy is not.
Fix: Ask your provider about covered pain management alternatives.
🩺 10. Concierge Medicine
Membership fees for boutique practices aren’t covered. Medicare still applies to covered services once you’ve paid the fee.
Fix: Decide if the extra access is worth the cost or find a traditional provider.
Bottom line: Medicare is a strong foundation, but not a complete safety net. Planning ahead with supplemental insurance, savings, or alternative coverage can help you avoid costly surprises.
