Special Enrollment Period in Response to COVID-19 National Emergency

Updated: Nov 15, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 national emergency, Medica will provide fully-insured small and large groups with an additional special enrollment opportunity for employees who previously declined or waived coverage. An employee enrolling through this special enrollment period may also enroll eligible dependents at this time. Self-insured employers may choose to provide this additional special enrollment period at their discretion.  The additional special enrollment opportunity will extend from March 26, 2020 to April 10, 2020. The effective date of coverage elected through this additional special enrollment period is April 1, 2020.

Employers are not required to adopt the additional special enrollment period, so no opt-out action is required on your behalf. Medica recognizes that each situation is unique and each employer must make their own decisions on the enrollment opportunity.

Eligible dependents, such as spouses and children, can be added if they are enrolled in the same coverage or benefit option as the employee.

Employers who offer an additional special enrollment period must offer the special enrollment period to all employees without discrimination.
